1. Team Communication – Slack

It is a multi-function team tool. It allows for team messaging. Another function is the channels each member can create. And it works well with Google Docs.

2. Document Sharing – Dropbox

Dropbox is a free to use and powerful tool for desktop and web access. It allows preview of almost any file and is cheap to upgrade to more storage. It is widespread – although I don’t like monopolies, I also hate lack of compatibility and standards – most people know how to use Dropbox and for those who don’t, it’s super easy to get an account, install, and learn how to use.

3. Version Control – Github

Github is the industry standard tool for version control in the mobile app and gaming industry. It allows team to work collaboratively but ensure versions are compatible and people don’t repeat tasks.

4. Prototyping – InVision

An NIC favourite! Allows for many types of softwares/files and team sharing/viewing. Has real-time capability. Easy to get up and running.

5. Time Tracking – Harvest

Harvest allows for tracking on time, expenses, salaries, payments etc… A one-stop, inexpensive tool.

6. Project Management – Asana

Asana has a large suite of tools and is great for managing project deliverables. It has multiple timelines and you can assign projects and have checkoff status for each.

7. Code Testing – Go Replay

Go Replay is very popular with mobile application companies and works well with Github.  Accurately emulates a lot of production environments and output platforms.

8. Digital Marketing Analytics – Ahrefs

Large suite of tools, such as tracking users’ profiles, study ranking, keyword analytics etc…

9. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – Ahrefs

Ahrefs also does this well and inexpensively. Second only to Google is usage and very cheap to get started with. I am a great fan of using as few tools to do the job as possible – cheaper, less learning curve, more compatibility, and fewer passwords!

10. Page Speed Testing – Website Pulse

Website Pulse is free to use and doesn’t require an account to get started – simply paste in your URL and go!
